Let’s Talk Sunscreen: Finding the Right One

Finding the right sunscreen is like dating - sometimes, you may have to try a few before finding your match. With each of us having different skin types and preferences - each purchase can feel like a first date where you test the waters. It may feel uncomfortable on your skin sometimes, but you’ll never know unless you apply.

Here’s a handy guide to narrow down your search for the right sunscreen for your delicate skin.

For Sensitive Skin

Look for hypoallergenic and non-comedogenic formulas. A good way to check how sunscreen sits with your skin is by doing a patch test. Apply a small layer of sunscreen on your arm and reapply after two hours. If it causes skin irritation, then that’s a clear red flag.

If you have sensitive skin, a higher level of SPF is the way to go, but avoid using chemical sunscreen as it may cause irritation and discomfort. Simply look for the listed ingredients on the packaging - if zinc oxide or titanium dioxide is not in there, then it’s likely a chemical sunscreen.

For Dry Skin

Dry skin is often more prone to irritation than other skin types. It may even be more delicate than having sensitive skin, due to a lack of moisture and natural oils. If this is you, we recommend that you look for a sunscreen with hyaluronic acid, as this can help replenish and prevent further moisture loss while you protect your skin from harmful rays.

For Oily Skin

If you have oily skin, it means that your sebaceous glands are producing more sebum and that your pores are prone to clogging with oil and dirt, so AVOID adding oil-based products into that mix. It’s recommended to go for a water-based or lightweight formula. If the sunscreen says “non-sticky” we think it's worth a try.

When looking for the right sunscreen, sun protection is paramount but so is ensuring the product is suited to your skin's needs. Don’t just go out there and give your skin any sunscreen you see in the market. It’s important to know your skin’s type and needs.
